From Fleet Experience to Startup Scale: My Time in the Platform Calgary Pre-Accelerator
Building a startup is a mix of conviction and chaos. What the Platform Calgary Pre-Accelerator taught me about clarity and community.
Building a startup is a strange mix of conviction and chaos. You spend months — sometimes years — believing in a vision before the outside world starts to see it too. For me, that vision became Easyfleet: a modern fleet lifecycle management platform designed to help companies manage procurement, maintenance, analytics, compliance, and asset strategy from one centralized system.
Recently, I had the opportunity to take that vision into the Pre-Accelerator Program at Platform Calgary — and the experience completely changed how I think about building a company.
More Than Just a Startup Program
Before joining the program, I thought accelerators were mostly about pitch decks and investor introductions. While those things matter, the real value came from something much more important: clarity.
The program forced me to step back from the day-to-day grind of building software and selling solutions, and instead focus on the fundamentals:
- What problem are we truly solving?
- Why does it matter now?
- Who feels the pain the most?
- What makes us different long term?
As founders, it is easy to get buried in operations and lose sight of strategic positioning. The mentors and advisors at Platform Calgary pushed those conversations constantly — in the best possible way.
Building Easyfleet With Real Industry Experience
One of the biggest advantages I brought into the program was real-world fleet experience.
Easyfleet was not created from theory. It was built from years of seeing how fragmented fleet operations can become:
- maintenance data in one system
- leasing in another
- compliance handled manually
- approvals stuck in email chains
- and critical lifecycle decisions made reactively instead of proactively
What the program helped me realize is that this problem is much larger than individual fleets. It is an industry-wide operational gap.
Modern companies expect modern software in every department — finance, HR, sales, logistics — yet many fleets still rely on disconnected tools and spreadsheets to manage millions of dollars in assets.
That realization helped sharpen our mission: build a true end-to-end fleet lifecycle platform that saves companies money at every stage of ownership.
The Power of Community
Another thing that stood out immediately was the community inside Platform Calgary.
When you are building a startup, especially in the early stages, it can feel isolating. Everyone sees the polished LinkedIn announcements, but very few people see the long nights, uncertainty, and constant problem-solving happening behind the scenes.
Being surrounded by other founders going through the same process created an environment where conversations became brutally honest and incredibly valuable. Everyone was solving different problems, but the underlying challenges were surprisingly similar:
- customer acquisition
- product-market fit
- scaling operations
- fundraising
- hiring
- and learning how to prioritize relentlessly
That environment creates momentum.
Refining the Vision
The program also helped validate something I strongly believe about the future of fleet management: the industry is moving toward consolidation and intelligence.
Companies no longer want ten disconnected vendors handling pieces of the lifecycle. They want visibility, automation, reporting, and actionable insights in one place.
That is where Easyfleet is focused:
- fleet procurement
- maintenance management
- operational records
- equipment lifecycle analytics
- resale optimization
- AI-driven reporting
- and operational decision-making tools
Not just software for the sake of software — but a platform intended to support operational decision-making across the fleet lifecycle.
Calgary's Startup Ecosystem Is Growing Fast
One of the most exciting parts of the experience was seeing how quickly Calgary's tech ecosystem is evolving.
Organizations like Platform Calgary are creating real infrastructure for founders to build scalable companies locally instead of feeling like they need to leave for larger markets immediately.
There is a strong shift happening toward innovation in industries that Calgary already understands deeply: transportation, construction, energy, logistics, heavy equipment, and operations technology. That creates massive opportunity for startups solving practical operational problems.
What's Next
The Pre-Accelerator Program was not an endpoint — it was a launch point.
It helped sharpen the business model, strengthen the vision, and reinforce the scale of the opportunity ahead. More importantly, it connected Easyfleet with a network of founders, operators, and advisors who genuinely want to see Canadian startups succeed.
We are still early in the journey, but the foundation is getting stronger every day.
And if there is one thing the program reinforced, it is this: the companies that win long term are not always the loudest — they are the ones that solve real problems consistently, adapt quickly, and stay obsessed with delivering value.
That is exactly what we are building toward at Easyfleet.
